Certain Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Greater Cancer, Heart Disease Risk

Higher consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is already associated with a number of diseases, but a new study has found that certain types may be worse than others. Specifically, animal-based products and artificially or sugar-sweetened beverages were linked to the highest risk for cancer and cardiometabolic diseases.

UPFs are foods that undergo the most amount of processing and typically contain ingredients, like colorants, preservatives, and artificial flavorings, that aren’t found in the average kitchen. They are generally considered less healthy than processed foods, which is a group that includes simple bread, tofu, and canned beans.

The study included data from 266,666 participants who were all free of cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes at baseline. After an average followup period of 11.2 years, researchers found that a diet higher in UPFs was associated with a 9% higher risk of developing heart or metabolic issues.

Animal products and sweetened beverages were linked to the overall highest risk of cancer or cardiometabolic disease. Other UPFs, including breads, cereals, and plant-based alternatives, were not found to increase the risk of either, but experts still warn against over-consuming them, since they have been linked to other chronic diseases in previous research.

Creative Arts, Diet Changes Could Improve Health for Postmenopausal Women

A combination of nutrition education and creative arts therapy was found to significantly improve mental wellbeing and overall quality of life for postmenopausal women in a recent study. All participants also experienced decreases in body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure.

The transition out of the menopausal stage of life can be a highly negative experience for many women with significant impacts to emotional wellness and cardiovascular health. Researchers wanted to explore a new way to ease the transition by using both dietary changes and creative activities.

The study was a very small one that included only 3 overweight, postmenopausal women. Each participant attended sessions with a nutritionist and participated in dance movement and art therapies for a period of 16 weeks. Given the positive results for both mental and physical health, a larger clinical trial is planned for 2024.

“While this was a very small sample and the findings cannot be generalized,” said Rebekka Dieterich-Hartwell, PhD, lead author, “they indicate that a multimodal intervention with educational, expressive and creative components can be beneficial for physiological and for the psychosocial wellbeing of postmenopausal women...” (For more info, see article ‘4 Top Creative Arts Therapies to Boost Mental Health’ below ↓)
